Empowering women-led agri-enterprise: the Bhuvikash Krish-E strategy

Women on Wings, in partnership with Dvara E-Registry, recently completed a crucial business strategy assignment with Bhuvikash Krish-E Farmers Producer Company Limited (BKFPCL), a women-led Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) in Odisha.

The drive for growth and impact

The women board of directors at BKFPCL demonstrated incredible vision and openness, articulating their drive to “grow new crops, make value-added products and work harder if we get a market to sell.”

BKFPCL is committed to transitioning its social initiative into a large-scale agri-enterprise. This new focus is centred on high-quality seeds, crops, and high-margin, value-added products, aiming for sustained financial independence and empowerment.

Co-creating a climate-smart strategy

To co-create a business strategy focused on dignified, climate-smart livelihoods, our team of Women on Wings Senior Business Consultant: Chanakya Mehta and Business Strategy Expert Arpita Pal Agrawal, alongside our partner and the FPO board, undertook a collaborative and intensive process:

  • Defined the organisation’s Why, How, and What.
  • Conducted a deep-dive SWOT analysis to understand internal and external factors.
  • Explored and modeled new potential revenue streams.
  • Shrewdly identified and planned for expansion roadblocks.

Key pillars of the new strategy

The co-created strategy introduces several strategic shifts to ensure BKFPCL’s long-term success:

  • Market-driven crop planning: Future crop planning will be focused directly on market demand, facilitated by connecting with new B2B buyers identified during the assignment.
  • Revenue diversification: New revenue streams will be added to significantly increase both annual turnover and impact.
  • Digital-first governance: The FPO will adopt digital technologies, moving away from paper-based and manual processes to enhance management efficiency and transparency.
  • Women-led collectivization: A strong focus will be placed on fostering the leadership within the FPO to drive the enterprise forward and expand collective ownership among the women farmers.

Ambitious three-year goals

BKFPCL has set aggressive goals for the next three years to measure the success of the new strategy:

  • Scale to over 3,000 women shareholders.
  • Achieve a 3x annual turnover.

Next steps include finalizing the timeline for B2B buyer connections and costing the new value chains.A Win for Empowerment

We extend a big thank you for this co-creation process to the Dvara E-Registry team and the FPO’s dedicated leaders. Their in-principle approval of the new business options is a huge win for the FPO’s long-term financial self-reliance and the empowerment of its women shareholders .
