Passion and dedication of a female carpet weaver

The life of 45 year old Meera Devi and her children has totally changed thanks to her work as carpet weaver for Jaipur Rugs. Meera Devi is from Surat Gragh Village. She studied up to 5th class and got married when she was 18 years old. Her husband Ishwar Mal left school at the age of 11. Meera Devi became a mother when she was 20 years old. Lack of income for their daily living was the major issue for the family. They didn’t have farming land so they were doing labor on daily wages which generated not enough income to support the family.

Meera Devi: “Life took a positive turn when I started working for Jaipur Rugs and received a regular income. I earn enough money to support my family. Two of my daughters are married, my younger daughter, who is educated, now is working and my son is studying in 8th class. I’m so proud. The work is my life and the work brought happiness to me and my children.”

“Through this partnership with Women on Wings, we want to enable more women to earn their own income that will give them greater financial means to improve their livelihoods. Economic independence for women means more children can go to school, more meals per day for their families and communities, and an overall better standard of living for them and future generations”
