The Ants

Business partner of Women on Wings since 2009

The Ants (The Action Northeast Trust) is an organization based in Bongaigaon in Assam. It’s mission is to work towards sustainable and holistic development for rural and poor communities mainly in the northeast of India.

It encourages women to empower themselves by using their traditional handicrafts to make beautiful products. Silk and cotton weaves, black pottery, bamboo baskets and mats are a few of these products that are being sold in their store The Ants in Bangalore, and through wholesale activities to other customers.

The Ants store was started in Bangalore with the purpose of providing a marketing platform to the artisans and in turn helping the livelihoods of artisans in the Northeast. The store also has an objective of promoting positive stories from the Northeast.

The Ants works directly at the village level in about 90 villages across 9 Village Council Development Committees on issues of health, women’s empowerment, livelihoods; village pharmacists through women volunteers & community laboratory technicians; women’s groups; alternate income opportunities through weaving, agriculture and off farm activities; information collection & distribution in user-friendly ways.

“Women on Wings starts where others normally stop; sharing knowledge and skills is just as important as micro-finance.”
