New partnership with Philips Lighting brings light to villages

Women on Wings has entered into a program with Philips Lighting India. Women on Wings will work together with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, for distribution of Solar Lighting Systems in about 800 off-grid or under electrified rural households in Pilibhit District in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Lights lengthen rural days
Days start and end early in rural India. The sun sets around 7PM. Summer and winter do not see a big difference, so families without proper lighting facilities are unable to work or study after 7PM. Women on Wings, with its 10 years’ experience of working in rural India, supports Philips Lighting’s initiative catering to the needs of rural households to develop innovative lighting solutions to improve their livelihoods. Solar lights are expected to increase the family’s daily activities and enhance their livelihood. The end objective is to measure and document the impact of access to solar light on daily activities of women and children in the families.

Understanding rural needs
Shilpa Mittal Singh, joint managing director at Women on Wings: “We will work closely with the families in these villages to understand their current lighting habits and the product’s performance in actual conditions. We specifically want to know what impact solar lighting has on the lives of people. Does it increase productivity of women, does it positively affect study hours of children? So in general we want to learn all the changes the modern lighting system has brought in their lives.”
